Is winter hardwood floor care different than summer care?

Do you have hardwood floors in your home? If you do, you've probably become accustomed to cleaning and caring for them, but did you know that winter hardwood floor care can be different from summer hardwood floor care? Here's what you need to know to take care of that floor during the cold weather months:

    Increased Traffic, Increased Care

We tend to spend more time indoors during the cold winter months, and that means more traffic on your hardwood floors. Increase the frequency of vacuuming and sweeping to make sure the floors are free from dirt and dust. Accumulated dust and dirt can make them look and feel dirty and can break down the surface of the boards.

    Put Mats by the Doors

Winter months mean more moisture and mud. Putting mats by the doors for boots and shoes can stop dirt, mud and moisture before they get tracked across the room. This will help cut down on wear and tear.

    Gaps Are Normal

When the humidity drops and the heat goes on, wood can dry out and shrink, including the wood in your flooring. This is normal. The boards will contract in response to the change in the environment. You might feel a jolt of panic when you first notice it, but it's not cause for concern. Just be sure to keep the floors clean so that dirt and debris can't get lodged between the boards.

    Professional Cleaning and Polishing

While regular cleaning is essential for all flooring, the cold winter months are a great time for professional cleaning and polishing of your hardwood floors. Getting the dirt out, bringing out the shine, and protecting the finish are all fantastic ways to combat the extra exposure to the elements that happens in the winter.
